Johnson Free Public Library

Business Info

Meet the Merchant:  “I’ve been with this library since 2005, and in that time, I’ve seen our library go from mostly loaning materials to offering services and adult education. We run classes in becoming a citizen, finding a job, working on your resume, learning English, even crafts. We also sponsor outreach programs like an Open Mic once a month where people perform (including me sometimes) and a Trivia Night at a local pub. We run book clubs, offer free books to kids at Night Out and the Tree Lighting, and loan Kindles with bestsellers already loaded in. We’ve become much more of a community and cultural center. About half of the librarians speak Spanish as well as English. I’d like to figure out a way to let people know that we are here for all information needs, from eBooks and downloadable audiobooks to local information about job and health fairs. I’ve also seen the quality of life improve in Hackensack. Everything is cleaner, there are more parks, and people in need have received homes and services. And now even more good things are coming into the neighborhood, like the performing arts center and new residential buildings. I think the whole community has come together to help people. There are many people here who love this city and want to help others, and they don’t hesitate to give of themselves.” – Sharon Castanteen
